De ce am ales să merg în Israel și ce am făcut acolo timp de 10 zile

Ca de obicei, planul inițial nu era să mergem unde am ajuns, de fapt. Pentru toamna aceasta ne doream Vietnam, Cambodia sau Nepal, toate ajunse doar în stadiul de idee, ce-i drept. Dar oricum, planul nu implica Israel – îmi suna banal, deloc exotic, și chiar periculos (când Rafael m-a anunțat, cu câteva luni în urmă, că wizz-air urma să introducă zboruri directe din Timișoara spre Tel-Aviv, mi-am jurat că „eu în țara aia nu merg niciodată!”)

A trebuit doar să întarziem cu organizarea călatoriei îndeajuns de mult încat să crească prețutile spre destinațiile noastre de vis, ca să încep să mă conving singură că cea mai bună și convenabilă varianta ar fi Israelul. După ce m-am documentat câteva zile despre posibila destinație, am decis: era, într-adevăr, un loc ce merită văzut!

Am decis, așadar, să zburăm spre Tel-Aviv și să stăm 10 (zece) zile, și dacă tot ne supunem riscului de a merge într-o țară atât de nesigură, să închiriem și o mașină, ca să putem călători prin toată țara și să vedem cât mai multe – văzusem eu pe net că au deșert, deschidere la mai multe mări, canioane și parcuri naționale mișto. Recunosc, deci, că nu am știut nimic despre țara asta înainte să luam biletele. Mai mult decât atât, era chiar să nu mergem, din cauza indiferenței si ignoranței de a îmi forma o părere înainte să trăiesc ceva pe pielea mea (nu faceți asta!).

Iată, deci, itinerariul nostru pentru 10 zile.

 

EN: As usual, the initial plan wasn’t going where we ended up in the end. For this autumn we wanted something like Vietnam, Cambodia or Nepal, but they remained only plans. Anyways, our scheme didn’y involve Israel – it sounded rather commonplace, not exotic at all and even dengerous (when Rafael has let me know, a couple of months ahead, that wizzair was going to introduce direct flights from our city to Tel-Aviv, I swore „I was not going to travel to THAT country ever!”)

It was only necessary to laten our travel planning long enough for the plane tickets to our dream destinations to raise up; so I started convincing myself Israel was the best and the most convenient option. After googleing a couple of days about our potential destination, we made the decision: it was going to be something worth seeing, for sure!

We decided to fly to Tel-Aviv and stay for 10 days, and if we were going to bring ourselves under the risk of going to such an unsafe country, than we had to rent a car as well, to be able to drive throught the whole country and see as much as we could – I saw on the internet that they had a desert, openings to several seas, canyons and nice natinal parks. OK, I admit I knew nothing about this country before buying the tickets. Moreover, we could have also missed this

experience due to my disregard of making an opinion before even seeing it with my own eyes (don’t you ever do that!).

So here is our 10-day itinerary:

 

3 zile in Tel-Aviv

Am aterizat pe aeroportul Ben Gurion la ora 9 dimineața, și pe la 12 la prânz ne plimbam deja prin Tel-Aviv. În cele 3 zile am încercat să vedem cât mai multe obiective turistice, dar ne-am permis și plimbări relaxante pe plajă sau prin centru vechi, ca să simțim specificul locului.

Ce nu trebuie să ratezi dacă mergi in Tel-Aviv:

•  Carmel Market: o piață în care găsești o mulțime de produse tradiționale și locale – fructe, mirodenii, dulciuri – și care este o adevarată experiență in sine
• muzeul de arta: muzeul deține colecții impresionante ale artiștilor locali, dar pune accent și pe lucrări celebre care au avut ca și inspirație un loc din Israel (Chagall – Zidul plângerii, Paul Signac)
• Jaffa: cartierul vechi arab, care prinde viață odata cu lăsarea serii, și în care găsești totul, de la pub-uri în are liber cu muzica arăbeasca, până la restaurante în containere renovate pe malul mării (The Container)
• malul mării Mediteranene
• un tur ghidat gratuit, oferit de municipalitățile orașului; turul are loc săptămânal, sâmbăta, nu necesită rezervare și are un punct de întâlnire; ce mi-a plăcut foarte mult a fost că poveștile s-au conturat in jurul perioadei Bauhaus (un stil arhitectural născut in Germania, dar foarte prosper in Israel – Tel-Aviv-ul se afla, de fapt, în patrimoniul UNESCO pentru că are cele mai multe clădiri Bauhaus din lume), dar ghidul – un israelian – a fost indeajuns de inspirat incat sa strecoare și povești frumoase ale vieții de zi cu zi a orașului

 

EN: 3 days in Tel-Aviv

We landed on the Ben Gurion airport around 9am, and around noon we were already walking through the Tel-Aviv streets. We tried seeing as much as we could during these 3 days, but we also allowed ourselves relaxing walks on the beach or in the old center, to be able to get that local spirit.

What you should not miss while in Tel-Aviv:

• the Carmel Market: a local market where you can find tons of traditional products – fruits, spices and sweets – and which becomes a real experience itself
• the Tel Aviv Museum of Art: the museum owns an impressive collection of local artworks, but also emphasizes famous paintings that had various places in Israel as an inspiration (Chagall – The wailing wall, Paul Signac)
• Jaffa: the old Arab neighborhood which comes to life in the evening and where you can find anything from outdoor arab music pubs to restaurants in old reconstructed shipping containers (The Container)
• the Mediterranean Sea beachfront
• a free guided tour offered by the city municipality; the tour takes place weekly, on Saturday, you don’t need to book in advance and there’s a meeting point; what I really liked about this tour was that the stories were about the Bauhaus era (an architectural style born in Germany but which flourished in Israel, as well – Tel-Aviv is, actually, on the UNESCO heritage list as the city with the most Bauhaus buildings in the world), but also because the guide – an Israeli – was inspired enough to squeeze in some local life details, as well.

 

 

1 zi la Mitzpe Ramon și Ramon Crater

Luni dimineață am inchiriat mașina de la Eldan (cu costul de aproximativ 150 de euro pentru 7 zile, plus belzina) și am pornit spre deșert. Drumul dintre Tel-Aviv si Mitzpe Ramon este de aproximativ 2 ore și jumătate, și este un impresionant traseu prin deșertul Negev. Craterul Ramon este un loc incredibil creat de natură – este, practic, o intindere imensă de pământ care s-a surpat acum mii de ani, creând o depresiune unde foarte multe specii poposesc în drumul lor migrator. Vegetația este inexistentă, dar vă asigur că priveliștea este impresionantă. Drumul național trece prin acest crater, iar din loc în loc există și drumuri forestiere spre diverse obiective.

 

EN: 1 day at Mitzpe Ramon and the Ramon Crater

We rent a car from Eldan on Monday morning (and we paid about 150 euros for 7 days, plus the gasoline) and we headed to the desert. The journey between Tel-Aviv and Mitzpe Ramon takes roughly 2 hours and a half and it’s an impressive road thtought the Negev desert. The Ramon Crater is a natural beauty – it’s, in fact, a huge land stretching which had undermined thousands of years ago, forming a beautiful hollow where a variety of species is halting on their migration journeys. The vegetation is absent, but I guarantee the view is amazing. The national road is in fact through this crater, and every once in a while you can find smaller roads which take you to some other sights.

 

 

Seara am înoptat în cel mai frumos și pitoresc studio într-o fermă de alpaci (Alpaca Farm), o adevarată oază în mijlocul deșertului, cu diverse activități cu lame, alpaci sau cămile și proveliști minunate.

 

EN: In the evening we spent the night in the most beautiful and picturesque studio at the Alpaca Farm, a real life oasis in the middle of the desert, with various llama, alpaca or camel activities and amazing views.

 

 

1 zi la Eilat și the Red Canyon

Marți dimineață am pornit spre Eilat, cel mai sudic oraș al Israelului, de unde, dacă te străduiești puțin, poți vedea Egiptul, Iordania și chiar și Arabia Saudită în depărtare. Orașul are deschidere la Marea Roșie, și se află la frontiera deșertului, deci oriunde ai întoarce capul, priveliștea este de vis. Noi am petrecut aproape o zi întreagă la Reciful Delfinilor – o adevărată oază de liniște, cu diverse zone (plajă, foișoare, restaurante, zonă de copii, terase plutitoare, scufundări cu delfinii) în funcție de preferințe. Reciful are 4 delfini, dar nu ii deține – ei sunt liberi și stau în acel loc de bunăvoie, nu sunt dresați și tot ce fac este alegerea lor. Cei care se ocupă de ei sunt specialiști în relația cu delfinii, îi îngrijesc și îi respectă.

 

EN: 1 day at Eilat and the Red Canyon

On Tuesday morning we headed to Eilat, the most southern town in Israel, from where you can see Egypt, Jordan and even Saudi Arabia, if you really try. The town opens to the Red Sea and stands at the desert border, so wherever you look, the view is mermerising. We spent almost one day at the Dolphin Reef – a real life oasis with various areas (beach, pavilions, restaurants, children area, floating terraces, snorkeling with dolphins) depending on what you prefer. The reef has 4 dolphins, but it does not own them – they are free and they choose to stay there, they are not tamed or trained and everything they do is their choice. The staff is specialized in dolphins’ behaviour, they take care and respect them.

 

După-masa am vizitat și canionul roșu, un canion foarte frumos si usor accesibil, cu un traseu care implică escaladări, și necesită echipament sportiv.

 

EN: In the afternoon we went to the Red Canyon, a beautiful and easily accessible canyon which involves climbs and you’ll need sport clothes.

 

 

1 zi la Timna Park

Parcul Timna este un parc extraordinar de frumos aflat întins pe perimetrul unei formațiuni muntoase din sudul Israelului. Parcul necesită deplasarea cu un vehicul pe drumul principal până la parcarile fiecărui obiectiv, urmând apoi trasee de diverse dificultăți spre canioane, inscripții egiptene sau văi impresionante (noi aveam mașina, dar poți închiria și biciclete în interiorul lui). Parcul este, cu siguranță, ceva ce trebuie sa vezi în vizita prin Israel – este, de altfel, potrivit pentru diverse tipuri de persoane, având activități foarte apropiate de parcare, dar și trasee de cu durată de mai multe ore (noi preferăm mereu traseele mai grele și mai satisfăcătoare, dar e bine să știi că nu trebuie sa le urmezi, dacă nu vrei).

 

EN: 1 day at the Timna Park

The Timna Park is an extremely beautiful park situated on the area of a mountaneous formation in southers Israel.  The park involves moving with a vehicle on the main road, to the parking lot of every sight, followed by various difficulties trails to canyons, Egiptian inscriptions or impressive valleys (we had the car, but you can also rent bikes once inside the park). The park is definitely something you have to see while in Israel – it’s also suitable for many types of persons, having both very accesible activities and several hours trails (we always prefer the difficult and more rewarding journeys, but just so you know, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to).

 

 

Am înnoptat la Kibbutz Lotan. Un kibbutz este o asezare traditională tipică israeliană în care o comunitate se dezvoltă împreună și lucrează pentru un scop comun, iar acesta era special pentru frumoasele sale construcții din chirpici.

 

EN: We spent the night at the Kibbutz Lotan. A kibbutz is a traditional Israeli settlement where a community grows altogether and work for the same purpose, and this particular one was special for its beautiful adobe constructions.

 

 

1 zi la Marea Moartă și Masada

în ziua precedentă plecasem din zona de sud, ne-am cazat la Ein Gedi, ca să putem să ne trezim devreme a doua zi. Soarele răsărea la ora 6, și am vrut să experimentăm traseul de pe Masada în lumina soarelui care abia răsărea. Ne-am trezit, deci, pe la ora 5 dimineața, pe la 6 am inceput să urcâm, iar peste aproximativ o oră ajunsesem la cetatea din vârful muntelul. Drumul pe acest munte a fost unul dintre cele mai frumoase, privind incontinuu spre răsărit, Marea Moartă si Iordania, iar faptul că am facut un efort considerabil să ne trezim și să urcam pe munte la o oră atât de matinală ne-a dat un sentiment foarte împlinitor.

Am coborât înapoi la parcare pe la ora 10 dimineața, deci aveam o zi întreagă înainte. Am mers spre Marea Moartă, și nu am ezitat nicio clipă – am intrat în apă instantaneu. Experiența de a pluti în această apă este una deosebită – practic, este imposibil să înoți, dar plutești fără să faci niciun efort datorita concentrației mare de sare din apă. Plajele sunt, în mare parte, gratuite, iar cele organizate (în care s-a adus și nisip, umbrele de plajă etc) au și dușuri (indispensabile, pentru că apa nu numai că este de 8 ori mai sărată decât oceanul, dar este și foarte uleioasă). După părerea mea , experiența este de neratat!

 

EN: 1 day at the Dead Sea and Masada

The previous day we had left the south, we camped at the Ein Gedi Camp Lodge to make it easier to wake up early the other day. The sun was going to rise at 6am, and we wanted to experiment the Masada train while gazing at the sun rising. We, thus, woke up around 5am that day, we started hikinh around 6, and within an hours we were at the citadel up the mountain. The hike on this mountain was one of the most beautiful ever, continuously staring at the sunrise, the Dead Sea and Jordan, and the fact that we did the effort of waking up and hike that mountain that early gave us a very rewarding feeling.

We got down around 10am, so we had the whole day ahead. We went to the Dead Sea and we didn’t hesitate a single moment – we entered into the water instantly. The experience of floating in the sea is really special – you can’t swim, basically, but you just float without doing anything, due to the high salt concentration. The beaches are mostly free, and the organized ones (where they also brought sand, sun umbrellas and so on) have showers, as well (very needful, as the water is not only 8 times more salty that the ocean, but also very oily). In my opinion, you can’t miss this experience!

 

 

 

2 zile în Ierusalim

Personal, nu m-au atras neapărat obiectivele religioase, dar am zis că, dacă tot eram pe acolo, merita să vedem despre ce e vorba. Orașul vechi este, într-adevar, foarte frumos, iar diferența dintre partea din Israel a Ierusalimului nou și cea din Palestina, te face să realizezi cât de diferite sunt culturile, de fapt. Totuși, toate străzile și locurile turistice sunt foarte aglomerate, ceea ce face să se piarda din sacralitatea locului, după părerea mea (dacă ea există).

Ca și sfat, plănuiește-ți din timp itinerariul, pentru ca, fiind vorba de atatea religii în același perimetru, bisericile, templele sau chiar și multe alte obiective funcționeaza după propriul program, neținând cont de orarul cu care suntem noi obișnuiți. Fii foarte atent și la suveniruri sau alte cumpărături – din câte am observat, israelienii nu prea negociază, dar exact aceleași produse le poți găsi la magazinul unui palestinian, la jumătate de preț, și chiar cu posibilitatea negocierii.

Am înnoptat la un hotel foarte drăguț situat chiar lânga piața centrală (The Market Courtyard).

 

EN: 2 days in Jerusalem

I wasn’t particularly attracted by the religious sights, but I admitted that it was worth checking them out if we were there. The old city is, indeed, very beautiful, and the different between the Israeli and Palestinian parts of Jerusalem made me realize how different the cultures are. However, the streets and all the touristic places are overly crowded, which make the place lose its sacredness (if any).

As a kind advice, I suggest you plan your itinerary a while ahead, because many religions being involved in such a narrow perimeter, the churches, temples and ever some other touristic sights work according to their own schedule, which is different from what we are used to. Be careful when buying souvenirs or other stuff – as far as I noticed, Israelis are less likely to bargain, but you can find the exact same products at a Palestinian’s shop, half the price, and also with the possibility of bargaining.

We spent the night at a beautiful guesthouse located right next to the central market (The Market Courtyard).

 

 

Alte sfaturi despre Israel:

• conform religiei naționale a Israelului – mozaică – ziua de sarbătoare oficială este sâmbăta, nu duminica, cum suntem noi obișnuiți
• incepând cu vineri dupa-masa și până sâmbătă seara, majoritatea magazinelor și restaurantelor (cel puțin din cartierele evreiești) sunt închise
• pentru ca sâmbăta este sărbătoare, săptămâna începe duminică, deci practic duminica ia locul lunii europene; ține cont de asta când îți plănuiești vizitele la muzeu sau alte locuri care sunt de obicei inchise luni
• moneda Israeliana este shekelul, iar valoarea acestuia este aproape egală cu cea a leului românesc; totuși, prețurile sunt cu mult superioare față de cele din România (restaurante, cazare, chiar și supermarket-uri)
• în Israel, armata este obligatorie atât pentru băieți, cât și pentru fete; o să vezi mulți soldați înarmați pe stradă, în supermarket-uri etc; antrenamentele au loc in diferite locuri în țară, iar noi am trecut de multe ori pe lânga tancuri staționate și panouri cu „atenție! Zonă de trageri cu arma!”; știu, toate astea pot ridica multe semne de întrebare, dar sfatul meu este să încercam doar să conștientizăm că trăim într-o lume foarte variată – culturile sunt diferite, la fel și legile, la fel și oamenii – și tot ce putem face este să ne bucurăm de ea
• dacă te apropii de sudul Israelului, unde lățimea țării scade considerabil, o sa vezi garduri multiple la granițele cu Egipt și cu Iordania; la fel ca și la punctul anterior – este lumea în care trăim, iar faptul că noi suntem obișnuiți altfel, nu înseamnă că ceva este, în mod neapărat, corect sau greșit
• israelienii sunt oameni foarte deschiși, cultivați și vorbesc limba engleză; nu vei întămpina probleme de comunicare, așa că simte-te liber să întrebi sau să ceri ajutorul ori de câte ori ai nevoie.

 

EN: Some other advice for Israel:

• according to their national religion – the mosaic religion – the weekly holiday is on Saturday, not on Sunday, as we are used
• starting with Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, most of the shops and restaurants (at least the ones in the Jewish neighborhoods) are closed
• as the holiday is on Saturday, the week starts on Sunday, so basically Sunday takes the place of the European Monday; keep this in mind when planning to visit museums of other places which are usually closed on Monday
• the Israeli currency is the shekel, and the its value is almost the same as the Romanian leu; however, the prices are considerably higher that in Romania (restaurants, hotels and ever supermarkets)
• everyone  has to serve in the army in Israel – boys and girls; you’ll see plenty of armed soldiers on the streets, in supermarkets etc; the trainings take place in various places and we even passed by parked tanks or road signs that said „beware! Firing zone!”; I know, all of these can make you question your safety while in Israel, but my advice it that we all try to realize that we live in a very varied world – cultures are different, laws and people as well – and all we are left to do is be happy we are able to see it
• as getting close to the southern Israel, where the width of the country reduces considerably, you’ll see multiple fences on the Egyptian and Jordanian borders; the same as the previous point – this is the world that we live in, and the fact that we are used differently is not necessarily right or wrong
• Israelis are cultivated and open minded people, and they all speak English; you won’t encounter any communication problems, so feel free to ask anything should you need help or advice.
