Cum să ajungi din România/Timișoara
Portugalia a devenit o destinație populară pentru români în ultima vreme, și nici nu e de mirare, având în vedere cât este de ușor să ajungi. Pentru Timișoreni, aeroportul din Budapesta rămâne cel mai convenabil și accesibil punct de plecare – atenție, totuși, la vama pe care o alegeți, ca să nu pățiți ca și mine, când am pierdut avionul spre o altă destinație din cauză că am stat o oră la coadă la Vama Nădlac; dacă mergeți cu mașina, e bine de știut că există parcare în aeroport (la distanță de 2/5/10 minute de mers pe jos, cu prețuri diferite pentru fiecare alegere), iar eu am plătit aproximativ 20 de euro pentru 6 zile. Din Budapesta se poate zbura cu wizzair spre trei orașe din Portugalia: Lisabona, Faro și Porto. Eu am ales Porto aproape întâmplător (pentru că era cel mai nordic dintre acestea trei, acolo urmând să mă întâlnesc cu prietena mea care venea din nordul Spaniei), dar cred că a fost cea mai bună alegere pentru prima călătorie în Portugalia.
EN: How to get there from Romania/Timișoara
Portugal has become a very popular travel destination among Romanians; no wonder, given how easy it is to reach it. For Timisoara residents, the Budapest airport is the easiest and most accessible way to fly to Portugal – beware of the border you choose if you don’t want to end up like me and loose your flight after waiting in line for 1 hour at the border; if you go to the airport by car, it’s good to know that there’s an airport parking (within 2/5/10 minutes reach, with different costs), and I paid around 20 euros for 6 days. From Budapest you can fly with wizzair to three cities in Portugal: Lisbon, Faro and Porto. I chose Porto almost randomly (as it’s the most Nordic city among the three, and I was going to meet my friend who was coming from the north of Spain), but I’d say it was the best choice for the first trip to Portugal.
Ce să nu ratezi in Porto
Azulejos – Sau plăcile de ceramică de Porto, cu care sunt decorate o mulțime de clădiri din toată Portugalia. Aceste plăci își au originile în perioada dominației maure, dar au evoluat în timp, până în momentul în care au fost considerate un element tradițional portughez. Cele mai multe clădiri care se bucurau în trecut de această decorație erau bisericile (azulejos pictate manual), dar și locuințele celor înstăriți. Ulterior, după cutremurul din 1755 care a distrus o mare parte a Lisabonei, stilul arhitectural Pombaline, introdus de Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (primul marchiz de Pombal), a favorizat utilizarea plăcilor de ceramică. Atunci au luat naștere, practic, o mare parte din clădirile placate cu azulejos care împânzesc tot Porto-ul și Portugalia. Totuși, pereții cu azulejos pictate manual, cei mai vechi adică, rămân cei mai frumoși pereți pe care i-am văzut vreodată, pentru că fiecare dintre ei spune o poveste (de obicei o poveste a vieții cotidiene, a istoriei sau culturii portugheze), și au fost lucrați cu atâta grijă! Nu numai că fiecare placă era pictată manual timp de câțiva ani buni, dar apoi erau luate bucată cu bucată și puse pe peretele simplu. Cred că e în plus să mai zic că am făcut peste 100 de poze cu pereții ăștia, din mai multe unghiri, la mai multe ore… da, e în plus!
EN: What not to miss while in Porto
Azulejos – Or the Porto ceramics that decorate a lot of building walls in Portugal. These tiles have been brought to Portugal by the moors, but have evolved into a proper traditional Portuguese element. Almost all the buildings that have this kind of decoration were the churches (hand-painted azulejos), but also the wealthy houses. Afterwards, after the earthquake that destroyed almost the whole city of Lisbon in 1755, the Pombaline architectural style (created by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the first Marquis of Pombal), encouraged the use of azulejos. It was back then that almost all the houses we see nowadays all around Portugal were constructed. However, the oldest walls, the ones with hand-painted tiles, are the most beautiful walls I’ve ever seen, as every one of them tells a story (usually a daily Portuguese life, history or culture story), and have been painted with so much care! Not only every single tile was painted manually (a process that took several years), but also they were put on the walls, one by one. I think I don’t need to mention that I took more than 100 photos of these walls; from different angles, different moments of the day… yep, I don’t need to mention that!
Dom Luís I Bridge – Cel mai fotogenic pod din Porto, care practic separă orașul Porto de orașul vecin – Gaia. În trecut, ele erau unul și același, iar Gaia era partea industrială, unde se aflau și majoritatea cramelor celebrului vin de Porto. Ulterior, Gaia și-a cerut independența, rămânând și cu cramele. Plimbarea pe pod durează 5 minute, deci este probabil distanța cea mai mică dintre două orașe, și se poate circula și prin pasajul inferior, dar și pe cel superior (oferind un view superb asupra malurilor și asupra întregului oraș).
EN: Dom Luís I Bridge – The most picture-perfect bridge in this city, that separate Porto from its neighbor – Gaia. Back then, these two were forming a bigger city together, Gaia being the industrial part, hosting almost all the Porto wine cellars. Afterwards, Gaia gained its independence, keeping all the wine cellars as well. The walk on the bridge takes around 5 minutes, which is probably the shortest distance between two cities, and you can walk on the bottom side, as well as the upper one (offering a great view over the river and the whole city).
Librăria Lello – Este foarte puțin cunoscut faptul că J.K. Rowling a locuit în Porto timp de doi ani, cu puțin timp înainte de a lansa ultra-celebra serie Harry Potter. Legenda urbană spune că ea și-a petrecut foarte mult timp în această librărie (în stil art nouveau, parcă extrasă dintr-o poveste – nu Harry Potter, una mai frumoasă), și s-a inspirat de aici în ceea ce privește multe detalii ale romanelor ei (fanii Harry Potter o să recunoască detaliile astea, eu nefiind una dintre ei, am admirat doar frumusețea librăriei). Alt fun fact este faptul că uniformele din Harry Potter (adică pelerinele acelea mari și negre, pe care le știe chiar și cel mai îndepărtat non-fan), sunt inspirate din uniformele pe care le poartă toți studenții în Porto. Nu glumesc, o să vedeți oameni pe stradă arătând ca în Harry Potter, și o să vă amintiți că v-am spus – sunt stundeți, așa e uniforma cu care merg ei la facultate.
EN: The Lello Bookstore – It’s rather unknown that J.K. Rowling has lived in Porto for about two years, right before publishing the ultra-famous Harry Potter series. The urban legend says that she spend a lot of time in this bookstore (art nouveau style, almost taken out of a fairy tale), and got inspired for a lot of details of her books (Harry Potter fans will recognize these details; as I’m not one of them, I only admired the architectural beauty). Another fun fact is that the Harry Potter costumes (the big black raincoats, which even the least Harry Potter passionate knows) are inspired by the uniforms that students in Porto wear. I’m not kidding; you’ll see people on the streets dressed like in Harry Potter, and you’ll remember what I told you – that’s their university uniform.
Casa da musica – Sala de concerte care se află pe locul 6 în lume în ceea ce privește acustica, și pe locul 1 la iluminare naturală. Acustica și lumina naturală sunt două lucruri aproape diametral opuse, cel puțin până când Rem Koolhaas și-a propus să schimbe asta pentru totdeauna. Pentru o acustică bună este nevoie de materiale care absorb sunetele și le reflectă înapoi uniform (de exemplu lemnul, din care sunt făcute toate instrumentele clasice), iar sticla este exact opusul – e un material rece, preia sunetul și îl dă înapoi într-un singur punct. Doar că arhitectul s-a gândit: sticlă curbă, care să disperseze sunetele în mii de locuri, și a rezolvat toate problemele. Bine, mai puțin pe cea financiară, pentru că a rezultat o clădire care a costat 100 de milioane de euro. Dar în rest, toate problemele cu sunetul și lumina au fost rezolvate. Filarmonica mai are o mulțime de săli adiacente: săli de repetiție, săli pentru copii, săli multfunționale, bar, restaurant, și nu în ultimul rând, terasa. Tuturor arhitecților sau pasionaților de arhitectură le recomand (insistent) să plătească un tur ghidat (10 euro, posibil gratuit pentru studenții arhitecți, dar am fost prea uitucă să mai intreb), iar celorlalti le recomand să meargă pentru terasă (se deschide dimineața la 11 și accesul e gratuit).
EN: Casa da Musica – It’s the 6th concert hall in the world in terms of acoustics, and the first one in terms of natural light. Acoustics and natural light are two almost opposite concepts, well, at least Rem Koolhaas decided to change that forever. Good acoustics require soft materials that absorb the sound and reflect it back evenly (the wood, for example, which all the classical instruments are made of), while glass is a cold fabric that disperses the sound in only one point. But the architect thought: curve glass, that can take the sound and send it back to thousands spots, and he solved all the problems. Well, all but the financial one, as the building construction cost around 100 millions euros. But yes, the sound and light problems have been solved. The philharmonic hosts a lot of other venues: rehearsal halls, children rooms, multi-functional venues, bars, a restaurant, and not the least, the terrace. I recommend all the architects and architecture lovers to pay the guided tour (which is 10 euros and may be free for architecture students, but I forgot to ask), and I recommend all the rest to visit the terrace (which opens at 11 am and it’s free of charge).
Ce și unde să mănânci
Francesinha la Cafe Luso – În primul rând, Francesinha înseamnă în portugheză „micuța franțuzoaică”, și asta e denumirea pentru cel mai mare sandwich pe care l-am mâncat vreodată și care te va îmbogăți cu 2000 de calorii. Cele mai aromate și gustoase 2000 de calorii din viața mea. Conține carne de steak, carne de burger, cârnați, bacon și mortadella, e acoperit cu cașcaval și ou, și se scaldă într-un sos făcut din 20 de ingrediente, printre care bere și whiskey (ignorați salata din poză, prietena mea de care vă spuneam mai sus este vegană, și a trebuit să rateze tot acest carusel culinar – treaba ei). Oricum, eu am mâncat de două ori acest meniu (4000 de calorii, deci), și vă recomand și vouă să faceți asta!
EN: What and where to eat
Francesinha at Cafe Luso – Firstly, Francesinha means “little french girl” in Portuguese, and it’s what they call the largest sandwich you’ll ever eat and which will earn you 2000 calories. The tastiest and most flavored 2000 calories I’ve ever eaten. It contains steak meat, burger meat, sausages, bacon and mortadella, it’s covered with cheese and egg and it floats in a 20-ingredient sauce (beer and whiskey being two of them). Please ignore the salad in the picture; my friend is vegan so she has to skip all this culinary roller coaster. Anyway, I ate this menu two times (which is 4000 calories), and I recommend you do that as well.
Mic dejun la Celeste – În fiecare dimineață mi-am luat un croissant foarte bun și un ceai, pentru care am plătit 1 euro și 40 de cenți, ceea ce mi se pare absurd de puțin. Au foarte multe dulciuri tradiționale portugheze, ca de exemplu Pastel de Nata, dar și gustări sărate. De obicei dimineața e coadă, și uneori nu se găsește loc de stat, dar eu aș merge tot acolo pentru micul dejun, și data viitoare când merg în Porto.
EN: Breakfast at Celeste – Every morning I bought a delicious croissant and a tea for 1 euro and 40 cents, which is ridiculously cheap. They also sell a lot of traditional Portuguese sweets, like Pastel de Nata, but salty treats as well. Usually there’s a queue in the morning, and sometimes you don’t find a free table, but I would still go there for breakfast next time I go to Porto.
Museu d’Avo – Se traduce în română „muzeul bunicii”, și restaurantul ăsta e un muzeu în toată regula. Atmosfera e una deosebită, cu decorațiuni din anii 1900, 20, 60, 70 etc., piese antice, mașinării care habar nu aveam ce sunt de fapt, borcane cu tot felul de ingrediente în ele, oglinzi vechi, muzică pe măsură și mâncare bună. Servesc, practic, echivalentul portughez al tapas-ului. Porțiile sunt relativ mici, pentru prețurile pe care le au, dar locul merită toți banii. Și aici am fost de două ori, asta înseamnă că, chiar mi-a plăcut.
EN: Museu d’Avo – It means “grandma’s museum”, and this restaurant is a museum for real. The atmosphere is amazing, it has decorations from the 1900, 20, 60, 70 and so on, antique pieces, machines that I had no idea what were in fact, jars with various ingredients inside, old mirrors, good music and delicious food. They basically serve the Portuguese equivalent of tapas. The portions are rather small for the price, but the place is worth every penny. I went there two times as well, so I really enjoyed it.
Ce să vizitezi în apropiere
Costa Nova, Aveiro – Pe scurt, cel mai frumos oraș foarte mic din apropierea unui oraș mare. Orașul propriu-zis se numește Aveiro, dar locul acesta cu case de turtă dulce colorată este o suburbie care aparține de el, situată la limita unei lagune a oceanului, și se numește Costa Nova. Drumul până acolo durează cam 2 și jumătate, și aș putea zice că locul nu e unul dintre cele mai accesibile, dar again, merită văzut. Noi am luat trenul din stația Sao Bento către Aveiro (7 euro dus/întors – bilet de o zi), după care am așteptat după un autobuz care ar fi trebuit să vină din 30 în 30 de minute. Ei bine, pentru că acest misterios autobuz nu se arăta, am comandat un taxi care ne-a dus de la gara din Aveiro până la Costa nova în 20 de minute, și a costat 15 euro. La întoarcere ne-am intersectat, cumva, cu autobuzul, și am plătit 2 euro pentru drumul de întoarcere până la gară. Extra tip: orașul e chiar lângă ocean, așa că e (mult) mai frig decât în Porto (nu vă lăsați păcăliți de ținuta mea sumară – mi-a fost frig).
EN: What to see nearby
Costa Nova, Aveiro – The most beautiful very small city near a big city. The main city is called Aveiro, but this place with colorful gingerbread houses is a suburb situated on the edge of an ocean lagoon, and it’s called Costa Nova. The journey takes around 2 hours and a half, and I wouldn’t say it’s the most accessible place, but it’s worth a visit. We took the train to Aveiro from the Sao Bento Railway station in Porto (7 euros the return trip – daily ticket), and then we waited for a bus that was supposed to come every 30 minutes. Well, as the mysterious bus wouldn’t arrive, we ordered a cab that took us to Costa Nova in 20 minutes for 15 euros. On our way back we somehow found the bus, and paid 2 euros for the trip to the train station in Aveiro. Extra tip: the town is situated by the ocean, which means it’s (way) colder than Porto (don’t get fooled by my tiny dress – I was cold).
Leça da Palmeira – Sunt niște piscine care arată foarte mișto, chiar pe malul oceanului, înconjurate de stânci și valuri sparte, realizate de celebrul arhitect portughez Álvaro Siza. Din pozele de pe net arată ca și cum există și un deal / munte / ceva înalt prin apropiere, unde poți să te cațeri într-o plimbare de dimineață și să privești toate astea, deci părea un loc minunat. Atâta doar, că pe net nu am gasit nimic referitor la lunile de funcționare ale piscinelor, așa că în luna aprilie erau goale. În plus, nu-i nici un munte prin apropiere, deci poza pe care am luat-o de pe net (de mai jos), este aproape o minciună:
EN: Leca da Palmeira – They are two swimming polls that look really cool, right next to the ocean, designed by the famous Portuguese architect, Alvaro Siza. From what I saw on the internet I thought there was going to be a mountain / hill / something high that you can climb and get a nice view over the pools, so it seemed a wonderful place to visit. The only thing is that I didn’t find anything regarding the schedule on the internet, so in April the pools were empty. Not to mention there’s no mountain nearby, so the picture I saw before going and I also attached here is almost a lie.

Sunt convinsă că locul arată grozav vara, dar sper că e utilă informația cum că în orice alt anotimp, mai mult ca sigur nu e nici măcar drăguț.
Bonus – Toate, absolut toate străduțele și intrândurile din Porto ascund niște comori arhitecturale și fotogenice, așa că alocați-vă puțin timp și pentru plimbări fără nicio destinație. Recomand Rua das Flores sau zona stației Sao Bento.
EN: I am sure this place looks great in summer, but I think it’s good to know that in every other season, it’s probably not going to be cute at all.
Bonus – Every single street in Porto hide architectural and picture perfect gems, so take some time for no-destination walks around the city. I recommend Rua das Floras and the area around the Sao Bento station.
