Jurnal de călătorie – Iordania

Ah, Iordania! O țară minunată, de unde m-am întors absolut îndrăgostită de tot ce am văzut, după numai 3 zile de vizitat. Absolut totul, de la print-urile materialelor cu care erau tapetați pereții, la nisipul roșiatic și trilioanele de stele pe care le-am văzut în deșert, până la mâncarea și dulciurile absolut delicioase. Am fost atât de impresionată de cultura lor, încât am cumpărat vreo două kilograme de prăjituri specifice, și mi-am înghesuit în bagajul de mână un covor cu modele tradiționale de beduini, țesut manual din lână, de vreo 2 pe 2.

EN: Ah, Jordan! A wonderful country which I came back from being absolutely in love with everything I saw there, after only 3 days of wandering around it. Absolutely everything, starting from the traditional carpet prints and colors to the reddish sand, the trillions of stars that we looked at in the desert and the delicious traditional food and sweets. I was so impressed by their culture that I came home with 2 kg of Jordanian sweets and I also stuffed a beautiful handmade Bedouin carpet into my hand luggage.

Ca și primă impresie, orașele mi s-au părut extrem de sărace – mai sărace decât ale vecinilor isreaelieni; oamenii, în schimb, primitori, darnici, nu atât de religioși, și nici atât de insistenți ca și marocanii, spre exemplu; prețurilem pe de altă parte – mari. Din cele trei restaurante la care am fost în aceste trei zile, la unul singur – numit Hashim, localizat în Amman – am plătit o sumă totală de 10 euro (pe o mâncare tradițională foarte bună, dar într-un spațiu similar cu o șaormerie, având un ambient mai degrabă de mâncat pe fugă). La fiecare dintre celelalte două am lăsat vreo 45 de euro (pe o masă pentru două persoane), și pe ambele le recomand pentru mâncare și pentru ambient: My Mom’s Recipe la Wadi Musa, lângă Petra, și Haret Jdoudna, în Madaba. Nu știu dacă depinde de categoria căreia se adresau – localnici sau turiști (probabil că da) – dar vă spun ce am experimentat eu.

Cazările, de asemenea, destul de pricey pentru ce am primit. Singura care chiar și-a meritat banii a fost campingul de beduini din deșert (Beyond Wadi Rum) care a costat vreo 37 de euro pe seară / cameră. Închirierea mașinii a fost, din nou, foarte costisitoare: cu toate că prețul inițial era de 30 de euro pe zi, în final totul a ajuns la un total de 180 de euro, adăugând toate asigurările și costurile extra (pentru 3 zile). Turul cu jeep-ul prin deșert a fost 80 de euro pentru 3 ore (nu extrem de scump, dar nici pe departe ieftin).

Ce să mai, în primă fază aș fi vrut să scriu că o excursie în Iordania e foarte affordable, având în vedere că prețul unul bilet de avion dus-întors din Budapesta a fost 30 de euro (!!), doar că după ce am făcut un calcul amănunțit, mi-am dat seama că pentru 3 zile in Iordania, cu tot ce am detaliat mai sus, plus viză, intrări la obiective turistice, motorină și așa mai departe, am cheltuit vreo 1100 de euro. Foarte mult, cel puțin pentru felul în care călătorim noi, și pentru faptul că, suma asta am cheltuit-o pentru 10 zile în Georgia și Armenia, de exemplu (citește aici).

EN: My first feeling was that the cities were rather poor – way poorer that the ones that I saw at their neighbors, the Israelis; the people were very welcoming and kind, not as religious and definitely not as pushy as the Moroccan Arabs, for instance; the prices, on the other hand – very high. Out of the three restaurants that we tried while in Jordan, only one – named Hashim, in Amman – cost us 10 euros in total (we ate delicious traditional food, but the place was rather small and crowded). For the meal at each of the other two restaurants we paid around 45 euros (for 2 persons), and even if quite costly, I recommend each of them for the nice food and atmosphere: My Mom’s Recipe in Wadi Musa, near Petra, and Haret Jdoudna, in Madaba. I’m not sure if the prices depend on the category the restaurant is addressing to – locals or tourists (probably yes) – but this is what I experienced and I’d also like to share.

The accommodation was quite pricey for what we got. The only one that was really really worthy was the Bedouin camping in the middle of the desert (Beyond Wadi Rum), which cost us about 37 euros per night / room. The car rental was, again, super expensive: even if the main car price was 30 euros / day, in the end (after adding all the insurances and taxes) the total reached 180 euros (for 3 days). Also, the Jeep tour cost 80 euros for 3 hours (nu overly expensive, but definitely not cheap).

While in the beginning – considering the fact that the return flight ticket from Budapest was 30 euros (!!) – I was planning to write an article about an affordable trip, after adding up every expense, here I am talking about a 3-day trip that cost 1100 euro (including everything that I detailed above, plus the visa, the touristic sights entrance tickets and the gas). A LOT of money! Or at least for the way we like to travel and for the fact that, for example, we spent the same amount of money on our 10-day trip to Georgia and Armenia (read here).

Alte lucruri utile pe care ar fi bine să le știi înainte să vizitezi Iordania:

VIZA de IORDANIA

Pentru a vizita Iordania ai nevoie de pașaport și viză, aceasta putând fi cumpărată din aeroport, în momentul în care ajungi, fără a fi nevoie să faci vreum demers înainte. Prețul unei vize este de 50 JOD (adică vreo 50 de euro). Un detaliu pe care nu l-am știut dinainte este că, dacă îți achiziționezi un Jordan Pass de pe net, dinainte, cu un preț începând de la 70 JOD, ai inclus în el viza, intrarea la Petra și intrarea în parcul național Wadi Rum. Adică economisești vreo 20-25 de euro. Noi nu am știut chestia asta dinainte pentru că, fiind o excursie organizată în câteva zile, pur și simplu am plecat fără să mă documentez prea mult. Au și variante puțin mai scumpe de Jordan Pass, care includ 2 sau 3 zile de acces la Petra, toate mai avantajoase decât biletele și viza luate separat.

EN: Other useful things you should know before going to Jordan:

JORDANIAN VISA

For entering Jordan you need a passport and a visa, which can be bought at the airport, the moment you arrive, with no previous step needed. The visa price is 50 JOD (that is about 50 euro). An important detail (that we didn’t know before going) is that, if you buy a Jordan Pass online for 70 JOD, before arrival, the Petra and Wadi Rum entrances are included and you save around 20-25 euro. We missed this opportunity as I organized this trip in a rush, with not so much documentation. They also have more expensive Jordan Pass options, which include 2 ore 3 days at Petra, all of them more profitable than the visa and tickets bought separately.

PETRA

Nu am cuvinte să descriu cât de frumos este Petra. Probabil ați văzut pe net fotografii superbe, am făcut și eu o muuuuulțime, ca să am amintire și ca să vă arăt și vouă, și trebuie să vă spun: tot ce vedeți în poze este cât se poate de real, și este chiar mai frumos în realitate. Istoria și legendele locului au făcut ca totul să se concretizeze într-o experiență minunată, pe care v-o recomand! Noi am petrecut o singură zi la Petra, dar a fost una foarte intensă. Am ajuns acolo la or 7 fix, moment în care nu era coadă deloc și nu am pierdut timp cu achiziționarea biletelor. Până la ora 3-4 după-masa, am reușit să vedem Treasury-ul, Mănăstirea, să urcăm până la un viewpoint de unde se vede Treasury-ul extrem de frumos, și unde un beduin și-a făcut un spațiu cozy cu ceai și cafea, și să mai vedem niște chestii, fugitiv, pe drum. La finalul zilei am fost extenuați, deci poate 2 zile la Petra ar fi o alegere mai rezonabilă, dar din lipsa timpului, pentru noi a fost mai ok o singură zi.

Aș mai vrea să vă informez cu privire la câteva detalii, și anume:

traseul complet parcurs de noi a fost de vreo 16-18 km;
drumul până la Treasury este de aproximativ 2 km, prin meandrele canionului, iar traseul are o înclinație mică, spre 0;
drumul până la mănăstire nu știu câți kilometri are, dar știu sigur că implică 850 de trepte, ceea ce îl face un traseu destul de obositor (chiar și în decembrie, care este una din cele mai friguroase luni, eu am murit de cald urcând), și mai ales, greu practicabil pentru copii;
există mai multe locuri de unde se poate viziona foarte frumos Treasury-ul; primul, este unul mai rapid, mai basic (în sensul că sus este pus doar un covor pentru poze, și nimic altceva), la care se poate ajunge doar dacă plătești o „taxă” băieților care stau acolo și insistă că vor să te ducă până sus; cel de-ai doilea, și anume cel la care am fost noi, este mai lung și mai anevoios (cam 45 de minute pe un drum stâncos, abrupt, periculos pe alocuri), dar mult mai rewarding, după părerea mea. În cel mai înalt punct al traseului este cortul beduinului de care vă spuneam, foarte primitor și drăguț. Acest al doilea drum pornește din altă parte, dar fiind acolo veți îl poți identifica rapid, fiind celălalt (nu cel de lângă Treasury);
teoretic, transportul cu calul sau măgarul (ori cu trăsura, în cazul persoanelor în vârstă) este inclus în prețul biletului – adică, așa am citit pe bilet, după ce am plecat. Nu știu, însă, care e adevărul, majoritatea oamenilor deplasându-se pe jos. Tot ce știu este că sunt fooooarte mulți oameni care te abordează în scopul de a te plimba cu măgarul prin Petra pentru vreo 5-10 euro. Ar putea fi un deal bun, dar nu știu ce să spun. Noi nu aveam cash la noi, deci nu am avut de ales, dar probabil că ne-am fi folosit picioarele în orice caz, pentru că altfel, de ce le avem?
în incinta Petrei, mai exact la începutul traseului spre mănăstire și chiar lângă aceasta, la finalul traseului, există baruri sau locuri de unde se poate cumpăra ceva de mâncare. Prețurile sunt rezonabile și locurile astea sunt chiar utile, având în vedere că îți vei petrece, cel mai probabil, toată ziua acolo.

EN: I have no words to describe how beautiful Petra is. You may have seen amazingly beautiful pictures on the internet; I also took some myself, to remind me of the beauty on the city and to show you some, as well, but I have to tell you: everything you see in the pictures is real, and it is even more beautiful in reality! The history and legends of the place turned that day into a memorable experience which I totally recommend! We only spent one day at Petra, but man it was intense! We got there at 7 am when it was no queue and we didn’t spend time waiting to buy the tickets. Until 3 or 4 in the afternoon we managed to see the Treasury, the Monastery, to get to a viewpoint from where we could enjoy a nice view of the Treasury and a tea and coffee inside a Bedouin tent, and to see some sculptures and other stuff on the way. At the end of the day we were exhausted, so maybe 2 days at Petra would be more decent. But not having too much time, we tried to do our best and visit as much as we could in one day.

I’d also like to tell you some other details:

our trail’s total distance was 16-18 km;
the trail to the Treasury has 2 km, it is between the meanders of a canyon and is has a tiny, close to 0% inclination;
I have no idea how long the Monastery trail is, but I know for sure it involves 850 steps, which makes it a rather tiring trail (even in December, which is one of the coldest months), and an almost impossible one for kids;
there are some places from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Treasury; the first one is a more rapid and basic choice (there is only one rug for pictures, and nothing else), which you can reach only if you pay a „tax” to the guys that insist that they will take you up; the second one, the one that we chose, involves a longer and more difficult trail on a rocky and steep (something-you-can’t-call) road that took us 45 minutes, but that was way more rewarding, in my opinion. On the highest point of the trail you’ll find the Bedouin tent that I told you about. This second trail starts from another point, but once you are there you will easily recognize it (as being the one that doesn’t starts by the Treasury);
theoretically, the transport by horse or donkey (or by carriage – for elderly) is included in the entrance price – at least this is what we read on the ticket, after we left. But I really don’t know what’s the truth, given the fact that the majority of visitors were walking. All I know is that there are a looooot of people that approach you hoping you’ll ride their donkey around Petra for 5-10 euro. It could be a good deal, but I’m not sure what to say. We didn’t have cash on us, so we didn’t have many options, but I assume we would’ve used our feet anyway;
inside Petra, at the beginning of the Monastery train and right next to it, there are some bars and restaurants where you can grab something to eat or drink. The prices are affordable and these places are really useful, considering the fact that you’ll most likely spend the whole day there.

WADI RUM

Ca să înțelegeți despre ce vorbesc, Wadi Rum este locul în care s-a filmat „The Martian”. Adică, cam atât de out-worldly este locul ăsta. E ireal, serios. E atât de frumos și de captivant, și chiar nu știu ce anume să vă mai spun despre el, pentru că mi se pare că nu are nevoie de nici o promovare sau descrieri în plus. Trebuie să vedeți fotografiile (si bineînțeles, să îl vedeți în realitate), și o să vă dați seama.

Pentru a intra în parcul național, trebuie să parchezi mașina la intrare, să mergi în incinta casieriei, să îți iei bilet (5 JOD, asta dacă nu ai Jordan Pass, caz în care poți intra direct), iar apoi continui să mergi cu mașina până în primul, și de altfel utimul sat, cam 6 km. Acolo, în vederea unei rezervări prealabile la unul din cele 40-45 de campinguri de beduini, reprezentantul cazării alese te va aștepta la intrarea în parcare. Această parcare este singurul loc unde poți lăsa mașina (destul de safe, din câte am văzut și experimentat), iar de acolo vei porni cu gazda ta, cu o mașină de teren, prin deșert. Rezervarea este absolut necesară, în primul rând ca să știi dinainte unde mergi și ce fel de cazare te așteaptă, dar și ca să nu fi pus în situația de a negocia cu oamenii direct acolo, cu bagajele după tine și obosit după drum. Noi am stat la Beyond Wadi Rum, campingul deschis de un beduin adevărat, pe terenul lăsat de tatăl lui. Am avut apă caldă, curent generat de panouri fotovoltaice, wi-fi, mic dejun tradițional inclus, un cort tradițional cu paturi normale, iar gazda noastră ne-a povestit detalii despre viața și cultura lor, ne-a cântat un cântec de beduini și ne-a luat cu el la o plimbare sub stele, prin deșert. A doua zi am mers la o tură de 3 cu jeep-ul, pentru care am plătit vreo 70 de euro pentru 2 persoane. Exista și opțiunea de tură cu cămila, dar nu am fost foarte curioasă de așa ceva. Întreaga experiență a fost cu adevărat deosebită, iar data viitoare aș sta măcar două nopți.

EN: In order to make myself clear I would like to highlight the fact that this is the place where „The Martian” was filmed. I mean, about this out-worldly this place is. It is surreal, really. It’s so beautiful and fascinating and I honestly don’t know what else to tell you about it, because I think it doesn’t need extra description. You have to see the photos (and of course see it for yourself) to understand.

To enter the national park you have to park your car at the entrance, walk to the cash desk, buy a ticket (5 JOD if you don’t have a Jordan Pass, in which case you can skip this step), and then continue to drive until the first and also last village (about 6 km). There, at the parking entrance, providing that you have a previous booking at one of the 40-45 Bedouin campsites, your host will wait for you. This parking is the only place where you can leave your car (it is rather safe, as far as I could experience), and from there your host will drive you to your tent, through the desert. Booking your accommodation in advance is absolutely necessary, at least because in this way you’ll know exactly where you’ll end up, but also because you won’t like to bargain at the parking entrance with people you know nothing about. We stayed at Beyond Wadi Rum, a real Bedouin camping, which a real-life Bedouin opened on the area that he inherited from his father. We had hot water, photo-voltaic panels electricity, wi-fi, traditional breakfast, a traditional tent with normal beds, and our host also told us stories about their life and culture, he sang us a Bedouin song and took us on a walk under the desert sky, at night time. The second day we booked a 3-hour Jeep ride which cost around 70 euro for 2 persons. There’s also the option of riding the camel, but I wasn’t really keen on trying. The whole experience was really amazing, and next time I’d spend at least 2 nights there.
